[2639] Dual Op Amp

One of these things is not like the other…

But they are both dual op amps. The one on the left is an integrated circuit, while the one on the right is made of discrete transistors.

Here are some more dual discrete op amps. Obviously the one in the back is not going to fit into most effects pedals, but it is interesting nonetheless.

I plan on conducting tests to see how the discretes perform against a few common chips. I suspect there will be a major difference in performance, and some of those characteristics could be interesting in pedals!

In a previous post I linked to a paper on op amp performance that includes data on discrete modules, though not the ones that are shown here.

I built a discrete op amp using the Urei design (using 5 transistors) that I put in a rat distortion that I modded, and it sounds pretty good!
