AMZ Mosfet BoosterAssembled Module© 1995-2016 Jack OrmanThe AMZ Mosfet Booster is a high gain amplifier that serves very well as a booster for guitar signals. It is low noise and has a clean sound that is basically your original signal, only louder. Although it is a clean boost, the signal may be mildy distorted (in a pleasant way) if very large signals are sent to it and the gain is cranked. If this is not desired, a higher voltage supply up to 18v can be used for more clean headroom.

If you need help with the off-board wiring, I have now added a drawing for basic stompbox wiring. The mosfet booster module has a low impedance output that can drive longer cables, tone controls or following circuits easily. It also isolates the guitar pickups from the output loading, which will give more clean sound. The LED output already has a current limiting resistor so all you have to do is run a wire to the LED and then to the footswitch for the bypass indicator.
The potentiometer is not included with the module purchase.
Frequency Response and Distortion I measured the frequency response of the mosfet booster module and it is +/- 1dB from 35 Hz to 20,000 Hz. This easily covers the full range of both the guitar and bass spectrums. A look at the harmonics produced by the module shows that it is very clean. The only harmonic of any prominence is the third (at 600 Hz) and it is -87dB below the fundamental 200 Hz audio, which demonstrates that the module is very clean (low distortion). The measurements were made when powered by a 9v power supply.
